In praise of lists

Writing has been a way for me to cope for most of my life. Whether that be journals or poetry or songs… writing out my thoughts just helps. I have so many notebooks in storage and so many in my apartment. Even my google drive sometimes functions as a journal/writing catchall!

Recently, I stumbled across some old lists. One is titled “10 reasons I am AWESOME.” Written in my early 20s, it sure reads like it:

1. I love to laugh.

2. I can find beauty in most anything.

3. I am compassionate.

4. I have sass, and I know when to use it.

5. I am intelligent.

6. I am creative and artistic.

7. I am bold and brave, even if I doubt myself.

8. I am emotional.

9. Once I have a destination, my drive and sheer desire can take me anywhere.

10. My sense of humor is fantastic.

But recently, I found a list I made for the transition into my 30s. I only got to 3, but thought it would be nice to share with y’all:

“30”

The past few years have been intense.

Some things I’ve learned:

  1. Life feels a hell of a lot better when you embrace your pace. When I have energy, I use it. When I feel drained, I find ways to replenish and nourish myself.

  2. Ask for help.

  3. Perfectionism and high achievement is EXHAUSTING.

And honestly, it’s just cool to see the way I’ve grown. In my 20s I needed a list of reasons why I am awesome. I wanted something to come back when I felt low and self-critical. In my 30s, I need gentle reminders to take care of myself, to seek support and to put down the idea that achievement is tied to my worth.

We all need different things at different points in our lives. I hope you can take a pause and try to identify what you need. I highly recommend writing them down— it’s a delight to stumble upon later and reflect.

Love yourself. Love your path. Love your pace.
